Why Thanksgiving Leftovers Are Not Dog Food Friendly?
Every year hundreds, if not thousands, of calls are made to veterinarians after the Thanksgiving holiday. The reason? Thanksgiving leftovers! Although they may be delicious, they often make dogs extremely ill.
In fact, Nationwide Insurance (who offers pet insurance plans) notes that veterinarian insurance claims spike between the months of November and January. It’s no surprise that those months feature the biggest times of holiday leftovers that are usually given as dog treats.
But the research goes further.
Vetenarians warn that feeding people food to dogs, ofen causes gastritis (a.k.a. vomiting), enteritis (a.k.a. diarrhea), colitis (a.k.a bloody stool), and pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas). All of these conditions can be caused by dogs eating people food and could severely affect their long term health. Subsequently, it is no wonder that when Nationwide Insurance analzes its data they find that they vast majority of veternarian insurance claims during the holidays involves any of the four dog health conditions above.
With all of that stated, it would be great to remember that although you may have more than enough Thanksgiving food to spare, it is best to keep your pet away from it. They may beg or even enjoy it at first. Yet, it can really cause them a lot of pain and suffering. There is a reason the proverbial phrase “sick as a dog” was coined. It is a really bad site to see, especially if it is your pet.
Dogs do not understand how bad people food can be for them, especially since they may see you eat it. However, responsible owners will see to it that their dogs’ health isn’t jeopardize by an over abundance of Thanksgiving leftovers this year.
